Creating a high-resolution PDF file

Generally speaking, if there is a problem in the original file,
this problem will persist in the PDF version.
We prefer to have PDF files certified in accordance with European standards.
However, if you are unable to supply this, it is important
to let us have a PDF file (non-certified) that matches the printed version.
  • Ideally your PDF file should be created from Acrobat Distiller and not the layout software.
  • The images used must be integrated into the PDF file in high-resolution EPS CMYK or Tiff format (300dpi and 400dpi if the printing raster is 200). Lab, RGB, and DCS formats cannot be used.
  • For four-colour printing, the additional colours will need to be converted into CMYK before the PDF file is generated, except if a fifth colour is used.
  • The fonts used must be included in the PDF file.
  • The PDF file must display the pages as units (not as plates).
  • Avoid capital letters, accents and other symbols (./$()*, etc.) in the file name.
  • Score lines and strips of colour are not necessary.

If your PDF file contains the following errors, we will have to ask you for a new one:
  • Fonts not incorporated
  • Images not incorporated
  • Incorrect format (dimensions)
  • No bleed off (2mm double trim)
  • Incorrect image resolution
  • Incorrect colorimetric space
  • Incorrect management of overprint and transparency
  • The document must be perfectly centred on the format, otherwise problems may occur upon imposition.

To be checked in the original file
  • Work in single pages (no “pre-flats”).
  • Always give preference to PostScript fonts.
  • Do not modify images to less than 80% or more than 120%.
  • Provide bleed off (overhangs of at least 2 mm) for elements printed to the edge of the finished format.
  • For layouts that are to be printed in four colours, but also in the related drawings, convert Pantone, personalised or additional colours into CMYK and do not use RGB colours.
  • If additional colours are included, use one name per colour (one name = one plate). Delete all colours not used.
  • “Image” files must be recorded in high definition (300 dpi resolution) in Tiff, binary EPS or EPS-JPEG, maximum quality. They must be either in shades of grey, or separated into CMYK, never in RGB, for four-colour printing. Line-block images must have a minimum resolution of 800 dpi and be in Tiff format.
  • Vectorise the fonts used if possible.
